'm joined by congresswoman barbara lee a democrat from california. good to see you. good morning. >> good to see you. glad to be with you. >> let me give you the republican perspective. it is that some indications they are willing to give on taxes whether 400 or 450,000, that yesterday they floated this idea of changing social security. they've backed off on that. they apparently are willing to give on some of these estate taxes. the democrats are willing to give on some of the estate taxes. but what the republicans want is they say that this deal that's being offered looks like it actually puts us further in the hole. it's actually costing us more than it's saving us. tell us what your take is on where we are right now. >> well, first let me just say it's a shame and disgrace that we are where we are. the american people are fed up first of all with this process. secondly, with the priorities that are coming forward. one is what's happening now to the 2 million people who have really fallen over this human cliff, who deserve an extension of their unemployment compensation? they want to w

the federal government has to recognize them. the other is a challenge to proposition 8 in california. that's the voter passed initiative that barred same-sex marriage in that state. now, that law was overturned, prop 8 was, by a federal appeals court that said you can't give a right and then take it away like this. if the supreme court does nothing more than uphold that ruling, it would apply only to california. so it may or may not get to the fundamental question about whether all states have to allow same-sex couples to get married. it could use the prop 8 case to reset question, but it doesn't necessarily have to. we're going to wait and see how broadly the supreme court wants to delve into this. >> how long do we have to wait before we see? >> they'll argue the case in march. we won't get the answer until late june. >> pete williams, always good to see you. >>> that's going to wrap up this hour of "jansing & co." >>> we are also covering marriage equality with equality matters. also on our agenda, wheels up. the president starts the week by hitting the road to michigan. as the clock ru

, a california democratic congressman, and it was a demonstration of what he thinks he can do going forward to influence gun policy on a national level. >> somebody who just might run for president of the united states is your number 19, because our governor isn't afraid to talk about global warming. for a democrat, you write affirming global warming isn't exactly a profile in courage, but it was brave considering the political spotlight was on him during hurricane sandy. of course we're talking about governor cuomo. the second governor cuomo. >> no shortage of elected officials who will run away from common sense on guns or global warming. we're patting the mayor and the governor on the back for taking these things on directly, saying we have a big problem in this country, too many crazy people, too many guns, and governor cuomo is saying yes, global warming is real. we took a big hit from it here in october with hurricane sandy, but it's also interesting in what it says, i talked about bloomberg wanting to have a national profile. andrew cuomo has a very promising future in national polit

stupid. >> all right, thank you so much, congresswoman jackie speier of california today. back to you, chris, we're just talking about it with the representative there. who is the to blame if they don't get the deal done here? the poll also overwhelmingly showing that people don't have a great feeling about the coming year. the numbers reading 69% think that 2013, going to be a period of division. you know, that really doesn't bode well, certainly, right here, chris? are they right? >> well, i think voters do understand that both sides will be to blame. and you're starting to hear that a little bit more from democrats. you know, i tox to max baucus, the senate finance chairman yesterday, he said i think people will blame all of us if we don't get it done. what was interesting about what the congresswoman just said, she called the kinds of reforms that have been out there on the table to entitlement programs medicare, medicaid, she said they're stupid, they shouldn't be done. that's a very different place than republicans are. while the congresswoman talked about discretionary spending
